Binged a little this winter? Don’t worry, so have we. These weight loss tips are the key to your success!
These days losing weight seems easy! There is always that new fad diet or new device that jiggles the fat off your body. But are they easy to stick with? Are they cost effective? Are they organic? Do they make a difference? – All questions that you NEED to ask yourself when making the decision to lose weight. If the answer to these questions are all no, we are here to help you out! We all want that perfect bikini body after a long three months of freezing cold winter. So, here are some helpful, healthy and organic tips to guide you along the way – they are also easy to work into your everyday life.
Tip #1: Diet is 80%, exercise is 20%!
We have all probably heard this saying quite often, especially when watching the health specials on the television, the health section in popular magazines or articles online. However, is it a myth or not? Well, studies show that what you are eating has a significant impact on both your weight and health, rather than just exercise alone. Increasing and intensifying your exercise regime will not help you shed weight as effectively. However, even the slightest change in diet paired with a balanced exercise regime is a major step in the right direction when losing weight. Try to work in more protein and healthy fats (I know all you Aussie ladies out there are avocado fanatics!) into your diet. Cutting out processed foods is an absolute must, and also trying to cut down on sugary food and drinks is imperative to weight loss! So, instead of reaching for that Nutella jar in your desk draw, your pantry, your bedside table…. So, what? We all have our hiding spots! Instead of reaching for the Nutella, maybe replace it with a low-calorie muesli bar! Changing your everyday diet is definitely the hardest step, but the most effective long-term!
Tip #2: Have frequent snacks instead of heavy meals!
There have been recent studies that show that people who eat smaller meals during the day are more likely to eat healthier and have a lower body index mass than those who eat three main meals every day. Eating more frequently with small portions also prevents significant changes in blood sugar levels, while also decreasing hunger and preventing excessive snacking on unhealthy foods, which ultimately would result in weight gain. So, to keep up with both healthy and helpful trends, try eating five small portions a day instead of less than four heavy meals!
Tip #3: Drink LOTS of water!
Now, I know this is a typical tip to hear on many health websites, but it is true! A lot of the time, the reason why we cannot lose weight is because when we THINK we are hungry, we are actually dehydrated. It is always good to have a reusable water bottle with you at all times, so that if you feel that familiar stomach rumble you have water ready to go! Not to mention, if you replaced all the sugary drinks – the ones that we reach for when we need an extra hit of energy – with water, this would make a huge difference in your weight loss journey. Drinking water before meals is another way that it helps in weight loss, as it is an appetite suppressant. This basically means that if you drink water before meals, it makes you feel fuller which ultimately results in eating less. The recommended amount of water to drink per day is 2L, so make sure you always have that water bottle with you. This tip makes a huge difference and is completely fool proof!
Tip #4: Try Intermittent Fasting!
Intermittent fasting is currently one of the most popular global fitness and health trends. Intermittent fasting (IF) is commonly defined as an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. Common IF methods involve sixteen hour fasts or fasting for twenty-four hours, twice per week. By eating fewer meals, intermittent fasting can lead to an automatic reduction in calorie intake. It also changes hormone levels to facilitate weight loss as it increases the release of the fat burning hormone norepinephrine, more commonly known as noradrenaline. Due to these changes in hormone levels, studies show that short-term fasting may increase your metabolic rate by 3.6-14%. A 2014 review study found that intermittent fasting can cause a weight loss percentage of 3-8% over a period of 3-24 weeks. So, in order to successfully fast, you are required to avoid eating large amounts of food during your eating periods. This kind of binge-eating would not facilitate any weight loss at all! So, even if you are craving those Krispy Kreme donuts, keep your portions small during eating periods!
