There’s nothing worse than trying out a detox tea only to find that you need to run to the bathroom when you’re in the middle of an important work meeting, a busy checkout line, or the social event of the year. Or maybe you’re happy with the way your healthy tea is working the first few days, but as soon as you stop using it, the weight just comes back on?
So, why don’t most detox teas work, and what is the best alternative healthy tea for weight loss?
The 411 on detox teas
Most detox teas work by using some form of laxative, as well as caffeine to reduce bloating, causing you to lose “water weight”. The caffeine acts as a diuretic. This means it will cause you to expel water from your body through urine and bowel movements. The laxatives will speed food through your digestive system, quickening bowel movements and causing you to lose weight after using the tea for a day or two.
The problem is that neither of these forms of weight loss are long-lasting. In fact, most people will put the weight back on immediately after they stop using the detox tea. Speeding up the metabolism unnaturally is also problematic, as it can slow right back down again when you stop using the product.
Detox teas with laxatives can even cause harmful side effects, such as:
- Elevated heart rate and an abnormal heart rhythm
- Abdominal pains
Long term use can lead to:
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Heart attack
The body adjusts to laxatives quickly, and will start to require them to be able to have regular bowel movements. The FDA has even reported several deaths which have resulted from long-term abuse of laxatives. They can be particularly harmful for those who already have liver problems.
Do detox teas really work?
Aside from these harmful side effects, pain, and the disruption that goes along with using products which contain laxatives, do detox teas really work?
There is scant evidence showing that detox teas containing laxatives actually work to help you lose weight or detoxify the body and in fact, using some detox teas may even cause damage to your body. In the long term, these teas aren't designed to help you lose fat at all, because by the time your food has been digested, all the calories have been absorbed into your body anyway.
Either way, detox teas are usually prescribed to be used alongside a healthy diet and exercise plan. They’re not designed to be a long-term weight-loss solution.
What is the best healthy tea for weight loss?
When thinking about weight loss, it’s important to have a holistic approach. Sadly, there are no shortcuts to long-term, sustained weight-loss; though most detox tea brands would have you think otherwise! The best approach is a healthy diet consisting largely of fresh fruits and vegetables, and an exercise routine supplemented with any natural supplements not easily found in your foods that might help along the way.
Our Beach Body Slim Tea contains natural herbs such as Acai berry extract, Schisandra berry, Garcinia cambogia, Burdock root, and Dandelion leaf. These all-natural ingredients work to help improve your metabolism and focus on your digestive and circulatory systems as well as improving operation of your immune system.
